There are two main types of abortion: medical and surgical. Regardless of the type of abortion procedure, it’s critical to monitor your body for potential signs of complications afterward.

Here are a few signs and symptoms that should point you toward a healthcare provider or an emergency room.

1. Heavy Bleeding

Heavy bleeding could mean different things, such as a perforated uterus (in the case of surgical abortion), an incomplete abortion, or another complication.

Soaking two or more pads per hour after a medical abortion is considered heavy bleeding. If you had a medical abortion, you can expect vaginal bleeding, but heavy bleeding is cause for concern.
Light bleeding after a surgical abortion is a common side effect, but bleeding enough to require changing a pad each hour is considered heavy after a dilation & curettage (D&C) procedure.

2. Fever

You have a fever if your oral body temperature rises to 100 F or higher. It’s a part of your body’s immune system response to an infection.
A fever can be a sign of many infections in the body. For instance, a flu virus or a sinus infection can trigger a fever. However, if you had an abortion recently and have a fever, especially one that lasts more than 24 hours, it’s a good idea to visit a doctor.

3. Foul-Smelling Vaginal Discharge

Vaginal discharge that smells foul or fishy could be a sign of an infection after an abortion.

However, foul-smelling discharge can also happen in other cases, such as when you have bacterial vaginosis or an STD called trichomoniasis.
Regardless of whether it’s related to an abortion procedure, it’s critical to visit a medical professional for treatment to determine the cause of the foul odor.

4. Pain

Pain is a symptom to note after an abortion procedure.

If you’re feeling severe abdominal or back pain or have pain that gets worse instead of better, call your doctor or go to your nearest emergency room.
