5 Signs that Show Your Relationship is Healthy, and 5 that don’t

Is Your Relationship Healthy?

Knowing whether your relationship is healthy or not can help you make wise choices about your future. A caring partnership boosts your well-being and makes it easier to face life’s ups and downs. On the other hand, unhealthy habits can leave you feeling anxious, isolated, or unsafe.

Sienna Women’s Health wants to support you as you think through your relationship. Below are five signs of a healthy relationship and five signs that something might need to change.

Signs of a Healthy Relationship

Healthy relationships have trust, respect, and open communication at their core. When partners feel safe sharing their thoughts and feelings, both people can grow together. Healthy communication helps reduce conflict and increase connection. Here are five signs to look for:

  • Honest communication You and your partner talk openly about your needs, worries, and boundaries without fear of judgment. You listen carefully and try to understand each other’s point of view. You feel safe bringing anything to each other because it is received and responded to appropriately.
  • Mutual respect Both of you value each other’s opinions, time, and space. You support each other’s dreams and encourage healthy self-care outside the relationship.
  • Emotional support You feel safe being vulnerable. Your partner offers comfort during hard times and celebrates your successes. You take turns giving and receiving support.
  • Equality in decision making You make choices together about finances, social activities, or future plans. Neither person dominates; you find solutions that feel fair to you both.
  • Healthy conflict resolution Arguments happen without yelling or name-calling. You stay calm, focus on the issue at hand, and work as a team to solve problems.

When these elements are in place, you build a strong foundation of trust and affection. You both feel heard and valued, and you can face challenges together.

Signs of an Unhealthy Relationship

Unhealthy relationships often start slowly, making it hard to notice the warning signs right away. These patterns can damage your self-esteem and take a toll on your mental and physical health over time. Watch out for these five red flags:

  • Controlling behavior Your partner tells you what to wear, who you can see, or how to spend your free time. This level of control limits your freedom and independence.
  • Constant criticism Instead of offering kind feedback, your partner puts you down frequently. Comments that make you feel worthless or ashamed can erode your confidence.
  • Isolation from friends or family You notice that time with loved ones is discouraged or made to feel like a threat. Healthy relationships let you keep your support network intact.
  • Lack of trust There is frequent jealousy or accusations without any proof. You feel as though you must “earn” basic kindness or loyalty.
  • Physical or emotional abuse Any form of hitting, pushing, threatening, or shaming crosses a line. Abuse can be emotional, verbal, or physical. If you feel unsafe, help is available. Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline for help at 800-799-7233.

If you see more than one of these signs in your relationship, it may be time to talk with someone you trust. You deserve respect, safety, and kindness in every relationship.

Feeling Pressured Into an Abortion?

Sometimes in a relationship, someone gets pregnant and the partner does not want the baby. In this case, the partner pressures the woman to get an abortion or forces one on her. It is not uncommon for the man to want an abortion but the woman wants the pregnancy. Know that it is your decision alone whether or not to get an abortion, and there are alternatives. Sienna Women’s Health can provide resources and materials to women who feel as though they are being pressured into an abortion.
